In recent years, the conversation around alcohol has shifted from moderation to abstinence and back again. Some reports suggest that enjoying any amount of alcohol may increase the risk of cancer and heart disease, while other research challenges the idea that there is no safe amount of alcohol. As a winemaker in Michigan, this issue is important to me for many reasons. I want my winery to thrive, but I also want my customers to be healthy. I drink wine myself and, for my own health, don’t want to over imbibe.
Wine has been a cornerstone of culture, connection, and culinary pleasure for millennia. The key to continuing this tradition in a health-conscious world isn’t necessarily total abstinence. Perhaps it is a more deliberate, mindful approach to drinking wine. By making a few small changes to how we drink and what we look for on a label, we can still enjoy wine while prioritizing well-being. By shifting the focus toward quality, timing, and wine origin—especially cool-climate wines—we can enjoy wine in a way that supports both our palates and our bodies.
1. Look for “Cool Climate” Gems
When deciding what wine to buy, keep an eye on where the bottle comes from. In cooler regions such as New York, Oregon, parts of Northern Europe, and Michigan wine country, grapes don’t accumulate as much sugar from the sun. Less sugar in the grape means lower alcohol content (ABV) in your glass.
These cool-climate wines tend to be crisp, refreshing, and naturally lower in calories.
On the flip side, wines from warmer regions like California or Spain often have much higher ABV levels. Cabernet Sauvignon from Australia or California can exceed 16% alcohol by volume.
By choosing a Michigan Riesling or Cabernet Franc, you’re often selecting a lighter, more body-friendly wine experience—without sacrificing flavor.
2. Become a Label Detective
Healthier wine drinking starts at the wine shop. Many people choose wine based on the grape or an attractive label, but the fine print reveals how that bottle may affect your body.
Analyze the ABV (Alcohol by Volume):
Alcohol is processed by the liver. A wine with 15% ABV has significantly more impact than one with 11%. If you’re seeking low-alcohol wine options, aim for bottles under 12.5% ABV.
Alcohol is also calorie-dense. A high-ABV, jammy Zinfandel will naturally contain more calories than a crisp, low-alcohol Pinot Noir. If you are watching your weight, lower ABV wines and dry wines (aka those without added sugar) are smart choices.
Reading wine labels carefully is one of the simplest ways to practice mindful wine consumption.
3. The Mediterranean Secret: Wine With Food
One of the biggest mistakes in modern “happy hour” culture is drinking wine on an empty stomach. This can cause a rapid spike in blood alcohol levels and place additional stress on your system.
One of the healthiest ways to enjoy wine is with food. In many cultures known for longevity, wine is rarely consumed alone.
Protein, fats, and fiber slow the absorption of alcohol. Wine also enhances flavor. A high-acid white wine can cut through the richness of grilled salmon, while the tannins in a red wine complement lean proteins. Chardonnay with buttery fish or scallops is a perfect example of how wine and food pairing enhances both.
When wine is part of the meal rather than a standalone beverage, you naturally drink less and enjoy more.
4. Take Time to Enjoy
Healthy wine drinking is about the quality of the experience—not the quantity. Swirl the glass. Notice the aromas. Let each sip linger.
Engaging your senses helps trigger satiety cues in the brain. One glass of high-quality wine sipped over 20 minutes is often far more satisfying than two glasses consumed quickly. Mindful wine tasting encourages moderation and deeper appreciation.
5. Savor the Meal, Then Cork the Bottle
Sharing a bottle of wine over a long dinner is one of life’s pleasures. To protect sleep quality and overall wellness, try a “dinner-only” rule.
Enjoy wine while the food is on the table. Once the plates are cleared, switch to sparkling water or herbal tea. Ending wine consumption with your meal gives your body time to hydrate and recover before bed, helping you wake up refreshed.
This simple habit can make a meaningful difference in how you feel the next day.
